CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS - Nov 26 2011
Jean Berger is the most documented painter of New France, due to his many legal charges of forgery, assault and robbery in Montreal in the early 1700s. He was a painter, yet his works are unknown today. All documentation about Berger is in legal manuscripts covering his infamous trial in 1704. Over three hundred years later, Dr. F.-M. Gagnon has published a book about Berger’s life and work, supported by the Gail & Stephen A. Jarislowsky Institute for Studies in Canadian Art.
The result offers a unique look at life in Montreal in the 18th century: a city of bored soldiers, secret affairs, drunken debauchery, crime and robbery…nothing like the ecclesiastical images of Montreal presented in narratives of our official history of Canada. But the mystery remains to be solved: Who was Jean Berger? There are no visual clues surrounding Berger or his life in Montreal during this period.
We are inviting submissions from contemporary visual artists to work with and respond to this history. Rather than historical recreation or illustrative depictions of Montreal at that time, this project seeks to use the gaps in historical knowledge as unique spaces for interpretation and creation, allowing for intersections between art historical research, artistic practice and curatorial strategies. How can contemporary art negotiate with the past? How can it respond to such inevitable gaps in historical knowledge today?
Selected artists will be included in an exhibition and provided with:
- Access to Dr. Gagnon’s research
- Ongoing consultation with the curatorial team
-Promotion through a website and publication
Submission packages must include, in a .zip folder:
-CV (no more than 3 pages) and Artist statement (1 page)
-Detailed project description of the work you plan to create (include as much detail about technical/spatial requirements as possible)
-Support Material:
-Up to numbered digital images in .jpg format, and corresponding image list with artist name, title, date, medium, and dimensions.
-10 minutes (maximum) of audio or video material
-You may also submit up to 2 other items of relevant support material (i.e. diagrams, articles, reviews, press clippings). These are optional, and should only be provided if they relate directly to your proposal.
Please ensure that your support material is compatible with Mac OSX. Please do not send Powerpoint presentations, slides, printed images, or VHS tapes, as these will not be reviewed.
Send submissions by email, no later than November 26th, 2011 to jean.berger.project@gmail.com. Artists will be notified by the end of November 2011.
